Remembering Sports Broadcaster Robert “Bob” Brooks

Robert “Bob” Brooks (BA ’48), 89, a sports broadcaster whose career spanned seven decades, died June 25, 2016.

Brooks began his broadcasting career during high school when a teacher recommended him as an intern to station management. Brooks who quoted himself as a “gofer” never thought broadcasting would lead to such a rewarding career.

"The best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been, and the people we’ve met along the way."

The Cedar Rapids native broadcasted Hawkeye sports for 57 years, covering all Rose Bowl appearances. Brooks also worked at KCRG, and KHAK during his seven-decade career. For the past 15 years, Brooks continued to work at KMRY radio until a recent illness. Throughout his career, Iowa athletes and coaches came to admire Brooks along with his work.

Brooks was honored as Iowa’s Sportscaster of the Year 10 times, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, and is on Kinnick Stadium’s media Wall of Fame.

Brooks also had the chance to see his name permanently emblazoned on the press box at Kingston Stadium, located in Cedar Rapids.
